uShip Rating: 9.0 Out of 10.0
The marketplace model uShip uses allows car shipping customers more agency over their choice of carrier than the brokerage or direct provider model. Customers submit their information on the site and wait for carriers to bid for the job. With this model, people get multiple quotes in one place, making comparing offers easier and more efficient.
Because this model essentially allows the customer to act in place of the broker, you’ll be responsible for vetting your own carrier. While this isn’t a lot of extra work, it is important. Not all car carriers are as reputable as one another. However, many people might prefer the little extra legwork for much more choice and control.
In this uShip review, we at the Guides Auto Team cover what kind of pricing, service and customer support you can expect from the marketplace. No matter where you want to ship your car, we recommend comparing quotes from a few of the industry’s best car shipping companies to find a good deal.

Better Business Bureau (BBB) Rating: A+

uShip is a shipping marketplace where carriers bid on customer job listings. Customers can connect with small, single-truck carriers and large brokers on the platform. Since uShip isn’t a broker, it doesn’t vet any of the carriers on the platform besides requiring them to be licensed for business.
That means one carrier could have a great cargo insurance policy while another might not. Because of this, uShip gives customers the option to buy extra insurance coverage for each shipment.
There are two types of pricing with uShip: instant quotes and marketplace listings. We found uShip’s instant quotes to be more expensive than the industry average. However, customers can usually find cheaper pricing with a marketplace listing.
1,500-Mile Open Transport Quote
Using the platform comes with a fee. The quotes we received include both uShip’s service fee and cargo insurance. Both of these charges vary depending on your vehicle. For the quotes below, uShip’s fee ranged from $40 to $100 and cargo insurance was about $150.
Use uShip’s instant quote tool on uShip.com or enter your shipment details to create a marketplace listing to get quotes from transportation service providers. Make sure to read carrier reviews on uShip when you find offers. There is also a uShip app available in the Google Play Store and Apple App Store that can put all this information at your fingertips.
uShip Payment Options
You have two payment options with uShip. You can either pay for the entire shipment in full with a debit or credit card when you book your order, or you can pay a deposit online and then complete the payment in cash to the driver upon delivery.
If you choose to pay in full up front, the money is held in escrow until you receive the vehicle and mark the order fulfilled, meaning your money is held by a third party until you have actually received the service you paid for. Many customers appreciate the security of this payment method.
What Affects the Cost of Auto Transport
The shipping costs you find on uShip vary depending on many factors. These are some of the most important:
- Shipping distance: Shipping providers charge by the mile, with rates typically going down as the distance increases. So, you’ll pay more overall for long-distance shipping but less per mile.
- Type of vehicle: In general, moving companies charge more to ship larger vehicles like SUVs.
- Time of year: Shipping rates are seasonal. Summer months and January tend to be the most expensive times to ship a car.
- Shipping options: Choosing options like enclosed transport over open container shipping can offer peace of mind but add to your car shipment cost.
- Vehicle condition: Inoperable vehicles cost more to ship because they require additional time and resources to load onto the carrier.
- Pickup and delivery locations: Car carriers may charge more if they have to go out of their way to rural areas. Shipping a car from big cities such as New York or from places along major interestates and highways will typically be cheaper.
How To Save on Car Shipping
You can save money if you take some time to plan out your shipping options. Here are a few tips:
- Choose open transport over enclosed.
- Ship to or from an auto terminal (not all carriers offer this).
- Book at least two weeks in advance.
- Be flexible with pickup and delivery dates.
- Meet the movers with their shipping vehicle in a town or along a highway if you are in a rural location.
uShip Car Shipping Services
As a shipping marketplace, uShip offers a wide range of services including open, enclosed and single-car shipping. Besides cars, you can ship motorcycles, household items, pets, RVs, heavy equipment and pretty much any other legal item, and you can ship anywhere in the world.
uShip offers standard door-to-door car shipping service, but you may also find terminal-to-terminal shipping depending on the carrier. You’ll find more flexible shipping options if you post a marketplace listing.
uShip Expedited Shipping
uShip’s marketplace listing tool allows you to set the pickup date as soon as the next business day. However, you may or may not find an available carrier depending on your location. You can expect to pay more for expedited service if you find a carrier in a short period of time.
Since uShip is a marketplace, it doesn’t guarantee shipping dates. Specific carriers may guarantee dates after booking.
Ship With Confidence Guarantee
Under uShip’s Ship With Confidence guarantee, the company compensates you up to $500 if you experience damage or loss during shipment and can’t resolve a claim with the carrier.
uShip Cargo Insurance Coverage
Since some auto transport companies may not have sufficient insurance limits, uShip sells extra cargo coverage through the insurance company Roanoke Insurance Group. These policies cover damage or loss up to $75,000 for auto shipments. The deductible is $500 for vehicles valued under $10,000 and $750 for vehicles valued over $10,000.
uShip does offer GPS tracking, but not all carriers participate in the program. Carriers need to allow uShip’s mobile app to access location data, and not all do. Ask your carrier at the time of booking if they offer GPS tracking. You can always call uShip or the carrier directly to check on the status of the shipment during transit.
How To Ship A Car With uShip
The shipping process with uShip is fairly straightforward. With a little preparation at each step, you can help ensure a hassle-free shipment.
1. Get a Quote and Secure a Shipment
Use uShip’s instant quote tool on uShip.com or create a marketplace listing to get quotes from transportation service providers. Make sure to read carrier reviews on uShip when you find offers. There is also a uShip app that can put all this information at your fingertips.
When you use the instant quote tool, you’ll see shipping offers with estimated pickup dates from a few days to a week out. You can choose a date, secure the shipment with a payment at checkout and then get connected with the carrier.
With the marketplace listing option, you can set a pickup date range. You’ll then see carriers and brokers bid on your shipment over a few days. Typically, you’ll see the price decrease as time goes on, and the same carrier may even bid multiple times to get the job.
Keep in mind that auto shipping prices are volatile and uShip doesn’t guarantee prices. A broker or carrier may come back to you with a higher final price than your original estimate depending on market conditions.
2. Get Your Vehicle Ready
After you book your shipment, get your car ready for the journey:
- Wash your car.
- Top off fluids.
- Turn off the alarm.
- Check the battery charge and fill the tires.
- Leave it with a quarter tank of gas.
- Remove all personal items from the vehicle, including GPS devices and aftermarket parts.
3. Meet the Carrier at Pickup
You’ll be in contact with the carrier a few days before pickup. On pickup day, allow for a few hours of flexibility. You can designate another person to meet the truck driver if you can’t be there — just give the driver the other person’s full contact information.
At pickup, you and the driver will inspect the vehicle and sign a bill of lading noting any existing damage. uShip recommends taking photos of the car at this point, too.
4. Meet the Carrier at Drop-Off
The carrier will give you a window of time to meet at the delivery location. Here, you’ll sign the bill of lading and note any new damage from the journey on the document. Take more photos of the vehicle if you notice any new damage.
5. Check For Damage
You can use the photos and bill of lading to file a damage claim if necessary. You’ll file it with uShip if you purchased the extra cargo insurance. Otherwise, you’ll file a claim with the carrier’s insurance. You can contact uShip’s support team to file a claim with a carrier if you need assistance.
uShip Customer Reviews
In general, uShip has positive ratings and customer reviews. On the BBB website, uShip reviews from customers give the marketplace a nearly 4.5 out of 5.0-star rating. uShip also has an A+ rating from the BBB itself. On Trustpilot, over 11,000 uShip reviews give the platform 4.3 stars out of 5.0 overall.
However, uShip’s customer service is only part of the story. Each carrier and broker on the uShip marketplace has a profile on the website. You can read reviews to learn about a company’s reputation on uShip, see its cancellation rate and view the reasons people canceled.
Our recommendation is to consider carriers and brokers that already have many positive reviews on uShip. You may find cheaper prices from less experienced carriers, but you want your car to be in good hands.
Positive uShip Reviews
Our team of experts found 80 out of 1,000 respondents in our car shipping survey used uShip to transport their vehicle. Over 60% of those who used the marketplace were satisfied with their car shipping experience. Further, nearly half of the respondents said they would recommend uShip to someone else.
Many positive uShip reviews on the BBB are from first-time users. A number of reviewers say they appreciate the escrow payment system and felt comfortable using it. Others say the uShip website guided them through the process in a straightforward way.
One reviewer on Trustpilot said uShip’s marketplace listing process made it easy to get affordable rates. The customer found an option within 24 hours of listing the job.
Negative uShip Reviews
About 7% of uShip’s reviews on Trustpilot are negative. The company also closed 42 complaints on the BBB in the last three years. Some reviewers say the final price increases beyond the initial quote, and others say carriers don’t pick up or deliver within the estimated time frame.
Overall, many negative reviews are about poor service from carriers. Since uShip doesn’t vet carriers, almost anyone with basic federal licenses can create a profile and accept shipments. In rare cases, scammers can pose as legitimate companies to steal deposit money or even physical goods. That’s why it’s important to check out each carrier before you agree to a shipment.
Our team reached out to uShip for a comment on these negative reviews but did not receive a response.
uShip Reviews: Bottom Line
We rate uShip 9.0 out of 10.0 considering the vast majority of customers have a positive experience with the online marketplace. However, we recommend you research the auto transporters you find through uShip before booking.
Best Car Shipping Companies
While you can find brokers on uShip, it’s worth comparing prices from brokers directly, too. We recommend Montway Auto Transport as our Editor’s Choice and Sherpa Auto Transport for its locked-in pricing.
Montway Auto Transport: 9.3 out of 10.0
Montway Auto Transport is one of the largest auto brokers in the industry, and it’s a popular service provider on uShip, as well. Montway moved more than 140,000 vehicles in 2020, according to its website, and it has been in business since 2007.
You can book open or enclosed shipping with Montway and send a car anywhere in the country and internationally. One perk of booking directly with Montway is that you can get a guaranteed pickup date for an extra fee.

Sherpa Auto Transport: 9.2 out of 10.0
Sherpa Auto Transport is a newer auto transport broker, having been founded in 2017. What sets Sherpa apart from its competitors is its Price Lock Promise. Shipping quotes from Sherpa are usually higher than average initially, but the company promises the final price won’t rise beyond the quote. Sherpa can also reimburse you for a car wash after delivery.
